ShakeOut 2025 – Are You Ready to Drop, Cover, Hold?
On Thursday 16 October 2025 at 9:30am, thousands of New Zealanders will pause what they’re doing, take cover, and practise the simple steps that can save lives in an earthquake:
👉 Drop. Cover. Hold.
This nationwide earthquake drill, Shake Out 2025, is our chance to prepare together.
Earthquakes can strike anytime, anywhere. Practicing now helps us react quickly and calmly when it really matters.
Why Shake Out Matters
New Zealand sits on the boundary of two tectonic plates, making earthquakes part of our reality. When the shaking starts, there’s no time to think, only time to act. Shake Out is about building that automatic response so we can all protect ourselves and those around us.
How You Can Get Involved
Shake Out is easy to join, and the more people take part, the stronger and safer our communities will be. Here’s how you can participate:
✔️ Mark your calendar – Thursday 16 October 2025, 9:30am
✔️ Register your group (school, workplace, club, household) at www.shakeout.govt.nz
✔️ Spread the word – share Shake Out with your whānau, neighbours, colleagues, and friends
✔️ Practice together – take a minute to Drop, Cover, Hold wherever you are
